Art of Sitting - In the Light of the Quran and Hadiths

Sitting is a common posture that we adopt in our daily lives, whether it is for eating, working, studying, or praying. But did you know that there is an art of sitting according to the teachings of Islam? In this blog post, we will explore some of the etiquettes and benefits of sitting in the light of the Quran and hadiths.

One of the most important aspects of sitting is to sit with humility and respect. Allah says in the Quran:

"And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful." (31:18)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said:

"Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will elevate him." (Muslim)

Another aspect of sitting is to sit with good manners and avoid harming others. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"None of you should sit between two people without their permission." (Bukhari)

He also said:

"It is not permissible for a man to make another man get up from his seat in order to sit there." (Bukhari)

He also said:

"Do not sit on the roadsides." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have no alternative but to sit there and talk." He said: "If you insist on sitting there, then give the road its right." They said: "What is the right of the road?" He said: "Lowering your gaze, refraining from harming others, returning greetings, enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil." (Bukhari)

A third aspect of sitting is to sit with remembrance and gratitude. Allah says in the Quran:

"So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me." (2:152)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever sits in a gathering and indulges in useless talk and before getting up supplicates: 'Glory be to You, O Allah, and I beg Your pardon for what I have done,' he will be forgiven for what he has done in that gathering." (Tirmidhi)

He also said:

"Whoever sits in a place where he does not remember Allah, he will incur a loss from Allah; and whoever lies down in a place where he does not remember Allah, he will incur a loss from Allah." (Ibn Majah)

Therefore, we should strive to sit with humility, respect, good manners, remembrance and gratitude. By doing so, we will follow the example of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) and earn the pleasure of Allah. May Allah make us among those who sit in His remembrance and praise. Ameen.
