An Islamic Analysis of Marilyn Monroe’s Famous Quote on Life and Love
“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”
― Marilyn Monroe
This quote is attributed to Marilyn Monroe, a famous American actress and model who died in 1962. She was known for her beauty, charisma and vulnerability. The quote expresses her attitude towards life and love, and how she wanted to be accepted for who she was, flaws and all.
From an Islamic perspective, this quote may have some elements of truth, but also some problems. On the one hand, Islam teaches that humans are imperfect and prone to mistakes, and that they should seek forgiveness from Allah and from each other. Islam also teaches that love is a gift from Allah and that it should be based on mutual respect, kindness and compassion.
“The believers are those who spend in charity during ease and hardship and who restrain their anger and pardon the people, for Allah loves the doers of good.” (Quran 3:134)
On the other hand, Islam does not encourage selfishness, impatience or insecurity, but rather selflessness, patience and trust in Allah. Anas narrated that the Prophet(s.a.w) said:
"None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."
لاَ يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2515
Islam also does not condone being out of control or hard to handle, but rather being disciplined, responsible and gentle. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
"The person who is strong is not strong because he can knock people down. The person who is strong is the one who controls himself when he is angry."
