Islam and the Rohingya Crisis: A Call for Justice and Compassion

It is clear that the mistreatment of innocent people, irrespective of their religion, is a grave sin. The Quran says:

 وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ

"And do not take any life which Allah has made sacred except in the pursuit of justice" (6:151).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized the importance of treating all human beings with kindness and empathy. He said,

"None of you truly believes until he loves for his neighbor what he loves for himself"

 لاَ يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لِجَارِهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ

(ibnmajah:66).

In the context of the Rohingya crisis, it is essential to acknowledge the complexity of the situation and the historical and political circumstances that have led to the displacement and suffering of the Rohingya people. The international community, including Muslim-majority countries, should exert pressure on the Myanmar government to ensure the safety and security of the Rohingya people and address the root causes of the crisis.

Regarding the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, any decision should be made with their consent, and their safety and rights must be ensured. It is essential to remember that repatriation should not be forced, and it is not enough to rely solely on identity verification to ensure the safety of the refugees upon their return. The Myanmar government must provide guarantees of citizenship and protection of their rights.

The involvement of China in the repatriation process raises concerns, given their human rights record and their complicity in the oppression of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang. However, if China can use its influence to pressure the Myanmar government to address the Rohingya crisis and ensure their safe and voluntary return, it can be a positive development.

Islam emphasizes the importance of justice, compassion, and respect for human dignity in all circumstances, including the Rohingya crisis. Any action or decision should prioritize the safety and rights of the Rohingya people and involve their consent. The international community, including Muslim-majority countries, must exert pressure on the Myanmar government to address the root causes of the crisis and ensure justice for the oppressed.
