"Hotel California" -The Dangers of Temptation and the Illusion of Materialistic Pleasures in Islamic Perspective

"Hotel California" is a classic rock song that has been widely popular around the world. The song tells a story of a traveler who comes across a luxurious hotel and stays there for the night. However, as the song progresses, the hotel starts to feel more like a prison, and the traveler realizes that he can never leave the hotel.

From a literary perspective, the song uses metaphors and symbolic language to convey its message. The hotel itself represents materialism and excess, which can be interpreted as a critique of the American culture of the 1970s. The "beast" that cannot be killed may symbolize addiction or a hedonistic lifestyle. This theme reflects the growing awareness during the 1970s that the seemingly unlimited prosperity and freedom promised by the American Dream were illusory and that many people were trapped in a system that they could not control.

One similar story from Islamic history is the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) in the Quran. Yusuf was the son of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob) and was blessed with beauty, intelligence, and prophethood. However, his half-brothers were jealous of him and plotted to get rid of him. They threw him into a well, and he was sold into slavery in Egypt.

In Egypt, Yusuf was purchased by a wealthy man and worked as a servant in his household. However, the man's wife tried to seduce Yusuf, but he resisted her advances. She accused him of trying to seduce her, and Yusuf was thrown into prison. A related verse is Surah Yusuf, ayat 23, which says:

And the woman in whose house he was, allured him not to restrain himself and she closed all the doors – and said, “Come! It is you I address!”; he said, “(I seek) The refuge of Allah – indeed the governor is my master – he treats me well; undoubtedly the unjust never prosper.”

In prison, Yusuf used his intelligence and ability to interpret dreams to gain favor with the prison warden. He interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners, and his interpretations came true. One of the prisoners was released and went back to serving the king, where he told him about Yusuf's ability to interpret dreams.

The king then summoned Yusuf to interpret his dream, which Yusuf did successfully. The king was impressed with Yusuf's wisdom and appointed him as his advisor. Yusuf was eventually reunited with his family, including his jealous half-brothers, and forgave them for their previous actions.

This story shares some similarities with the Hotel California story in that both involve a protagonist entering a new place and facing challenges that they must overcome. In both stories, there is a sense of being trapped and unable to escape. However, in the story of Prophet Yusuf, there is a clear path to redemption and forgiveness, whereas the Hotel California story leaves the reader with a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty.

In conclusion, we must be cautious of our own desires and not let them become a prison.
