The Islamic View on Idleness and its Dangers: Exploring the Proverb “Idle Brain is Satan’s Workshop

"idle brain is satan's workshop" is a proverb that means people who have nothing worthwhile to think about will usually think of something bad to do. It is not a direct quote from the Quran or the Sunnah, but it may reflect some Islamic teachings about the dangers of idleness and the importance of seeking knowledge and doing good deeds.

Idleness can lead to boredom, depression, laziness, forgetfulness, and temptation by Satan. The Quran warns against following the footsteps of Satan, who is an open enemy to mankind -

(Quran 2:168).

The Quran also encourages Muslims to remember Allah in all situations, to seek His guidance and protection, and to avoid vain talk and idle pursuits -

Certainly will the believers have succeeded:

They who are during their prayer humbly submissive

And they who turn away from ill speech

And they who are observant of zakah

And they who guard their private parts

Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed -

But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors -

And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive

And they who carefully maintain their prayers -

 Those are the inheritors

Who will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.

(Quran 23:1-11).

The Sunnah, or the example of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), also shows that he was always busy with worship, teaching, charity, social justice, and other beneficial activities. He advised his followers to make use of their time wisely and to avoid wasting it on things that do not benefit them in this world or the hereafter. Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,

"There are two blessings in which many people incur loss. (They are) health and free time (for doing good)".

Sunan Ibn Majah 4170

Prophet Muhammad encouraged people to work and repulsed them from idleness. He said:

"It is better for anyone of you to take a rope (and cut) and bring a bundle of wood (from the forest) over his back and sell it and Allah will save his face (from the Hell-Fire) because of that, rather than to ask the people who may give him or not."

Riyad as-Salihin 538

one of the supplications for seeking refuge from idleness and laziness is:

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men.

This dua is based on a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud and others.
