The Meaning and Implication of Surah Muhammad Verse 36 for Marital Life
إِنَّمَا ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا لَعِبࣱ وَلَهۡوࣱۚ وَإِن تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ یُؤۡتِكُمۡ أُجُورَكُمۡ وَلَا یَسۡـَٔلۡكُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلَكُمۡ
Al Quran - Surah Muhammad 36
The worldly life is just a sport and pastime; and if you accept faith and be pious, He will bestow your rewards to you, and not at all ask you for your wealth.
The verse also warns the believers against being distracted by the worldly pleasures and attractions, such as games, entertainment, beauty, pride, and competition in wealth and children. These things are like a rain that makes the plants grow and look green and fresh, but soon they wither and turn yellow and become worthless. Similarly, the worldly life will soon end and its joys will fade away, while the Hereafter will remain forever with either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure from Allah.
The implication of this verse in the context of marital life problems is that it can help the spouses to prioritize their relationship over the worldly matters that may cause conflict or dissatisfaction. The verse can also remind the spouses that they should seek Allah’s pleasure and guidance in their marriage, and not let the temporary pleasures and diversions of this life distract them from their ultimate goal of attaining Paradise. The verse can also encourage the spouses to be grateful for what they have and not compare themselves with others who may seem to have more wealth, children, or beauty. The verse can also motivate the spouses to be patient and forgiving with each other, and not let their anger or pride ruin their bond. The verse can also inspire the spouses to work together for the sake of Allah and support each other in their faith and good deeds.
